Although the fighting had ceased, the fallout from the First World War was so destructive that hatred between nations survived well into the 20th century. Great powers worked for their own interests, and after the Wall Street Crash of 1929, trust was at an all time low and as powers militarised, countries feared for their alliances to keep their people safe.
